This week, we’re delighted to welcome this year’s Mathsoc president, Professor Jan Manschot. He will be delivering an introduction to modelling black hole entropy using partitions! A partition of a number N is a way of writing N as a sum of positive integers. In the first part of the talk, he will explain enumeration of partitions such that it is easily understandable by a mathematician. In the second part, he will explain their relevance for theoretical physics, in particular for the understanding of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of black holes in string-theoretic models.
This will be our final talk of the year, followed by our AGM next week. As always, the talk is followed by a reception in Mathsoc with free refreshments. All are welcome!
