This week, we’ll be hosting a talk on “The Physics and Philosophy of the 17th Century Discussion on the Nature of Light” with both Professor Stefan Hutzler of the TCD School of Physics and Professor David Berman of the TCD Department of Philosophy. Hutzler and Berman will discuss the lively discussion which took place throughout the 17th century concerning the nature of light, with contributions primarily from Rene Descartes, Pierre de Fermat, Christiaan Huygens, and Isaac Newton. In summarizing their key arguments they will refer to the philosophical principles they are based upon, and the possibility of deep psychological factors at work in Newton’s disagreement with Descartes. We may even be in for a few light demonstrations!
